Re "California can find road to prosperity by embracing hydraulic fracturing" (Viewpoints, Nov. 20): The reasoning afforded by Rep. Kevin McCarthy's promotion of the wondrous road to prosperity afforded by hydraulic fracturing cannot go unchallenged. His "entrepreneurs and innovators" are the multinational oil companies whose off-shoring tendencies play no small part in the unemployment he pretends they will assuage if they have their way in California. More importantly, he evades the realities of fracturing: the need for copious quantities of our most precious commodity, water, and the injection into our aquifers of unknown and (thanks to the oil companies' influence) unknowable deadly chemicals. McCarthy's proposition is little more than a fairy tale.
