Re "To clean up government, bring back mandatory military service" (Viewpoints, Dana Milbank, Dec. 2): As a citizen who recently turned 18, I would be horrified if I were forced to enlist in military service just to serve in public office. I think military service is only a good experience for those who believe in what they're getting themselves into. In regard to Dana Milbank's claim that all of our recent leaders have been both self-interested and lacking in a military background, I would have to agree with him. However, I believe it is the public's fault that we choose leaders who do not live up to our expectations. There are already plenty of veterans available who are worthy of office. Maybe we should call on them to serve in Congress.
