Re "Teacher disciplined for 'Santa is white' remark" (Page A5, Dec. 15): Santa Claus is an amazing character who survives generation after generation because, as with all true folklore, he reflects the best identities and values of the people who tell his story. The Albuquerque, N.M., teacher spoke with appalling ignorance when he told a black student that Santa is white. Santa is every color that we are: black, white, brown, yellow, red, Irish pink, and every shade in between. To the student, Christopher Rougier, I would say, "Yes, Christopher, there is a black Santa. He's as real and wonderful as you are. He is the best in all of us. Thank you for the powerful reminder of who we are and why we love Santa Claus.”
