Re “Ruling clears path for attorney” (Page A1, Jan. 3): I think it’s a positive development that the California Supreme Court has allowed an undocumented immigrant to work as an attorney, and it couldn't happen to a more decent guy. But there is a back story to Garcia's quest for legitimacy. Garcia had a formal request to our federal government for resident status that has been sitting in Washington, D.C., for about 19 years. Nineteen years is not a matter of patience and waiting a long time. It is, in effect, a denial of service. As an American citizen, I expect more from the government that I help pay for. Until the U.S. government cleans up its act regarding simple immigration requests, any criticism of the immigrants is without merit. Congratulations to Sergio Garcia for doing it the right way.
