Re “Don't let progress ihttp://www.sacbee.com/2014/01/04/6044985/editorial-dont-let-hard-won-gains.htmln Afghanistan go without a fight” (Editorials, Jan. 4): The editorial draws the wrong conclusion from the facts stated. True, Iraq fell into chaos when the United States withdrew, but we created the conditions for chaos when we removed Saddam Hussein, the tyrant who had forced Sunni, Shiite and Christian Iraqis to tolerate each other. The editorial’s reference to Afghans is also a fantasy. We should have recognized from the failed British and Soviet wars in Afghanistan that the people of that country cannot be forcibly united as citizens with common interests. It is sad that we learned nothing from the Vietnam War.
