Schools need good systems, support

Re "Money isn't only factor for schools" (California Focus, Dan Walters, Jan. 5): I agree that money alone will not help our most in-need students learn and succeed. But, drawing on my many years of teaching and community-organizing experience, I believe much more helped Sanger schools succeed than just good curriculum and teacher mentoring. It’s likely that teachers, administrators, parents and other community members provided a large amount of time, money and personal resources to schools. If they are not paid for, then they are donated. Sanger probably also benefited from a well-orchestrated process that allowed the community to shape the process and outcomes of the school improvement program. Sanger’s K-12 schools likely had systems in place to support students and their families, such as after-school services and literacy opportunities for the extended family. In addition, Sanger schools probably provided transitional support for students after high school.
