Public has seen arena petitions

Re “Let the public see all the petitions for ballot measure on arena” (Editorials, Jan. 9): The recent editorial on petitions for the arena ballot measure demonstrates again the Bee's rejection of the idea that Sacramentans should be allowed to vote on the arena deal. Tens of thousands of voters have already seen the petitions, and they signed them. Mayor Kevin Johnson and other arena backers want to avoid a public vote at all costs. They remember the 80 percent vote against an arena deal in 2006. But if this current arena deal is worthy, the voters will surely back it. If, as one spokesman for the pro-arena faction claimed, the deal will lead to the economic revitalization of the entire Sacramento region, the vote should be a slam-dunk. Maybe the billionaire Kings owner and multimillionaire players should build their own playground.
