Re ”Dems pledge fealty to power” (Forum, Dan Morain, Jan. 12): The people of California should read about the 17th century political philosophers Thomas Hobbes and John Locke. Hobbes’ approach and that of Democrats, like Assemblyman Ken Cooley, D-Rancho Cordova, lean toward big, unlimited government that creates laws to control the behavior of society. Following this agenda, Democrats like to promise you free stuff, but not freedom. The founders of our country followed John Locke's idea of the purpose of government is to protect our liberties, life and property, or, in other words, our natural rights. Cooley and his fellow Democrats are not doing this. That is why opportunities are drying up in California, while laws are taking more of our freedoms.
