Re “Consumer initiatives will save lives, money” (Forum, Jan. 12): Authors Jamie Court and Carmen Balber assert that medical malpractice is the "third leading cause of death in America." This is false on its face. Malpractice doesn't even make the list. Interested readers can learn the facts from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention at http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/fastats/lcod.htm. Increasing pain and suffering awards and drug-testing physicians are not the way to improve patient safety. Seeking individuals to blame and punish is not the solution. We must improve the systems of care.
