Celebrate pigs, not bacon mania

Re "Dig in (and drink up) at a week of bacon mania" (Ticket, Page 5, Jan. 17): How sad to read in The Bee about a "celebration of all things bacon,” which started Sunday. When people choose to eat bacon, they are contributing to the slaughter of pigs, which are smart, defenseless and kind animals. There's no morally acceptable reason for that. Why not celebrate love and concern for animals, rather than their slaughter?
