Follow rules so bikes, horses can share trails

Our beautiful multi-use trails are one of the best things about Sacramento, but I know of two serious accidents in which equestrians have been severely injured because their horses were spooked by bicyclists. Horses spook easily, so etiquette and safety for bikers is to stop riding until the equestrians pass. If the bike riders are approaching from behind, they should call out to the equestrian in a calm tone and request to pass. Joggers should follow similar guidelines. -- Karen Heidebrecht, Sacramento
