Re “Brown wants to bring some contract jobs in-house” (Page A1, Jan. 20): Having been a civil service employee for 37 years myself, I would feel better if Gov. Jerry Brown, while hiring more civil service workers to replace some contract workers, would institute a program where incompetent public workers were let go. During my time, there were workers that should not have been employed in these valuable jobs. In every place I worked, there were some that were an embarrassment. Letting these inadequate workers go will help increase the public’s respect for public service. Retaining them will make the governor’s plan incomplete.
