Sacramento should install water meters now

Re “Cities crack down on water waste” (Page A1, Jan. 19): Sacramento cannot wait until 2025 to install water meters. Anyone who has tried to ski in the Sierra or seen Folsom Lake lately knows that the state’s water problems are drastic. The only way to get residents to reduce water use is to make them pay for the quantity they use. Yes, Gov. Jerry Brown declared a drought, and cities throughout the region are going to crack down on water waste, but so what? Every day I see water rushing into storm drains from lawns and sidewalks. Neighbors who are too lazy to conserve won’t respond to the problem until it hits them in the pocketbook. There will never be enough city employees to police all of these water wasters. Instead, the city should find a way to speed up the installation of water meters. Install them now.
