Re “Auditor flags fire crews OT” (Our Region, Jan. 22): All our fire departments have been working constantly to put out the numerous wildfires that have threatened not only our forests, but our homes as well. While the amount of money paid to Sacramento city firefighters for overtime seems outrageous, they spend long hours containing fires, and their pay should not be investigated by an auditor. A fire department is especially essential in Sacramento, where we are having a record dry spell. Before we find fault in those who save our environment, we should ponder the land that would be lost if we couldn’t pay firefighters to protect it.
