Re “Brown’s speech clunky, with nothing new” (Dan Walters, Jan. 23): Dan Walters took Gov. Jerry Brown to task for a State of the State address. Walters said Brown was guilty of, among other things, recycling a previous quotation from the Bible about thrift. If Walters wants to talk recycling, he should look at his newspaper columns. His old and outmoded criticisms about Democrats running the state into the ground have ignored, time and again, the real recovery brought about by Democrats doing the job they were elected to do. This is a far cry from the doom-and-gloom intimations of Walters and his ilk. The real question here isn’t whether Gov. Brown’s speech was relevant. The real question is whether Dan Walters’ critiques are still relevant.
