Re “Hearing ordered on inmate’s death” (Page A1, Jan. 23): Why was inmate Joseph Duran referred to as a "career criminal"? The only careers would seem to be those of the prison officials and staff who continue to benefit from brutal, sadistic behavior. Joseph Duran was a tragic example of chronic, untreated, mental illness. The tragedy was compounded by preventable death at Mule Creek State Prison. I am grateful to The Bee for shining a light on California prisons, but please choose your words carefully. -- Willa Pettygrove, Davis
