Re “Police oppose making rules for weed” (Page A1, Jan. 26): The story’s headline tells precisely why California has failed regarding the issue of marijuana. Colorado created a legitimate working system for marijuana use and sale. California officials did not create a regulated system, which has allowed the black market to thrive and left us with a broken, unenforced wild west. With all the efforts to rid the state of weed, it is still our No. 1 cash crop. Have we not experienced enough under the rules of the War on Drugs to know that the current way is not working? With the realignment of felons convicted of non-violent crimes to local jails wreaking havoc on communities, it is important to realize that prohibition of marijuana does not work. We should not pull law enforcement away from pursuing the real criminals. We need to legalize, regulate and tax marijuana.
