Re "A reality check on water supply" (California Forum, Feb. 2): The push for construction of tunnels to divert water from Northern California to the Los Angeles Basin is ludicrous.

One has but to look at the Owens Valley water diversion project to see the devastating effect of questionable planning. Robbing Peter to pay Paul is not a recipe for success.

Israel has turned their arid country into a productive landscape aided by the development of desalinization plans. Since Los Angeles and San Francisco are situated on the ocean, why has this successful and sustainable solution alluded California's lawmakers?
