Re "Analysis: Workers will cut back hours under health law" (Page A1, Feb. 5): According to the Congressional Budget Office, the Affordable Care Act will lead American workers to voluntarily put in fewer hours on the job. The lower work total will come from people who choose not to be employed or reduce their hours in order to maximize government-provided benefits. Such a decline is a common phenomenon in social welfare programs.
Republicans claim this will reduce jobs, while Democrats say it will give workers the flexibility to choose to work less. How can they say that with a straight face? Saying it will give a person flexibility to choose to work less is like laying people off and saying they are lucky because they can take a vacation.
