Re "Brown: Frugal or spendthrift" (Letters, Feb. 3: Letter writer Richard Power repeats the usual mantras of the Jerry Brown bashers without any analysis. High-speed rail goes "from nowhere to nowhere" and "there is no need for it."
How tiring. People who have traveled in Europe or Japan are keenly aware of how vital trains are, especially high-speed ones. I would love to be able to travel to Los Angeles in three hours without the drive down Interstate 5 or a lengthy detour to the airport with its expensive shuttles, parking and the degrading security.
People who are aware of population projections for California and the impacts this increase will have on our highways and airports are not the ones who claim there is no need for high-speed rail.
