Water flowing the ocean is not wasted

People often have the misconception that any water that flows into the ocean is wasted. I am not an expert, but I am sure there are numerous reasons why an adequate flow through an estuary is important, including prevention of silt build up, maintaining access for migratory and estuary fish, and preventing salt water from entering.
