Re "Comcast plans a media powerhouse" (page A1, Feb. 14): We should know from experience that the Federal Communications Commission eventually will approve this merger after "tough" hearings and sturm und drang lamentation.

When, if ever, will we cease to roll over on our collective tummy for the cable monopoly? When will we insist the FCC and others take the initial steps to challenge the cable giants, read Comcast, and pressure them to moderate their outrageous pricing? Can't we at least join the rest of the world and petition the government to promote fiber optics as a viable and superior alternative to cable? What? You argue the quality of TV programming is so pedestrian it's not worth spending more money on? That was my point.
