Re "S.F. seeking a special college deal" (Dan Walters, Feb. 17): Dan Walter's column misses some key facts. The City College of San Francisco situation comes down to something called accreditation, a way of making sure an educational institution is meeting its goals.
What's happening here is an accreditation system gone haywire.
The head of the group contracted to conduct accreditation for California community colleges has made compliance with standards ever more difficult. Even though California has one of the best community college systems in the country, thanks to this agency gone rogue, the system is facing the majority of nationwide accreditation complaints.
Sierra College, for example, has bent over backwards to satisfy the demands of this organization. Nonetheless, Sierra has also been put on notice.
