Re "County lacks watchdog unit" (The Public Eye, March 2): The Adult and Aging Commission was established by the Board of Supervisors to inform and advise the board on senior issues, especially safety. I was chair of the commission in 2011 when concern was expressed over loss of expert staff for financial abuse.
The commission developed protocols for quarterly interviews, reports and analysis of county safety net services. We were astounded by the heroic creativity, expertise and devotion of the Adult Protective Services Department. Any concerns rested not with staff but with budget cuts.
The commission was the first county commission to be defunded followed by other services for the elderly. The Board was repeatedly warned of consequences of the gaps in protection for the approaching silver tsunami by quarterly and annual reports and a lengthy comprehensive special report. The elderly deserve better.
