Re "Many in state middle class face a health wallop" (Page A1, March 8): Insurance companies are in business to make profit. They can and will set premiums as they choose. People involved in medical care charge whatever they can get from these companies. They, too, profit.

My grandson lives in Austria, which has socialized medical care. The system works well.

Mothers stay several days in hospital, not just overnight. Mothers can stay home to care for the baby for two years, including one year at full salary, and another year and a half at partial pay. Taxes are high for this peace of mind.

We pay much more for our medical care, and what do we have? How much is peace of mind worth? Americans deserve better.
