The death of Preston Bleak

Our neighbor, Preston Bleak, died Saturday night in the place in the alley around the corner from us where he slept. A Vietnam veteran, he had been homeless for years and appeared to be in the early stages of Alzheimer's. He turned 61 this month.

Pat, another man who sleeps in the same alley, took over the care of Preston's dog, Puppy.

What kind of a crazy country lets its citizens with disabilities sleep out in the rain? What kind of a crazy city council still can't find a little space for Safe Ground after years of promises, and wants to cut even the inadequate affordable housing requirements it has now?
