Re "Tough-on-crime rhetoric doesn't solve prison issues" (Editorials, March 18): "Tough on crime" is not just tired. It is a horrible failure that has spent billions of dollars with no one feeling any safer.
It effectively ends lives not just of prisoners, but of their significant others, children and impoverished communities. It does next to nothing to prevent new crimes.
We need rehabilitation and diversion, not warehousing. That's what the Assembly Select Committee on Justice Reinvestment is all about. We need to reform sentencing, and that's what Assemblyman Tom Ammiano's AB 1633 is about. Let's get creative on crime and repair California.
