Fire district is greedy

Re "What's special about special fire districts?" (Editorial, March 22): The Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District is what it is: a greed machine. The fire captain who made $415,000 earned additional bonus credits towards retirement.
A critical service without financial checks and balances becomes entrenched in self-importance, increased fees for services and demand the best salary and benefit packages for personnel. If you find these perk packages offensive, it's time to move out of California.
The enablers at fault are the voters. Don't blame the district board members and the fire chief. They are just self-centered and greedy. How about all the non-voting property owners? What responsibility do they bear? What's wrong with living in an entitled society?
