Re "FBI sting arrests Yee," (Page A1, March 27): No one should be surprised when an elected official is found to be soliciting bribes. Our whole electoral process is based on bribes. Getting elected today to all but very minor offices a lot of money. The only source for that money is personal wealth or "donations" from other people. People who "donate" to a candidate are doing so primarily to gain influence and encourage that candidate to perform in office as they want. All donations to a candidate are bribes. Once elected, all public officials collect more bribes in order to have funds available for the next election. This problem is a feature of our electoral system, not a deviation from it. Campaign finance reform would solve this.
