Re "Climate panel's outlook ominous" (Page A1, March 31): The article about the latest expert climate report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change showed that we're at a fork in the road.
We can continue on a business-as-usual path relying on fossil fuels, which pose a high risk of widespread species extinctions, coastal inundation from sea level rise, rivers flooding, droughts and heat waves hurting crops and other dangerous consequences. Or we can choose to minimize those risks by taking action now to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions.
Without a price on carbon pollution, we're effectively putting those costs on a credit card. When crops are damaged and extreme weather on steroids causes more damage, we'll have to pay the price down the line. Instead we should pay a lower price upfront to avoid those expensive and harmful impacts. The best solution is to implement a revenue neutral carbon tax.
