End of democracy

Re "Ryan's budget plan would slash $5 trillion" (Page A8, April 2): Rep. Paul Ryan's proposal to slash taxes for the wealthy and cut programs for the poor and middle class has placed another nail in the coffin of democracy.

It was our thriving democracy that enabled the U.S. to become the world's economic, military and human rights leader. Disagreements between the two parties ended at the border. We presented a united front to the rest of the world.

That has ended. Republicans criticize President Barack Obama for what he says, does and wears. There is no effort to improve our country, only a constant struggle to undermine whatever he tries to do from health care for all Americans to rebuilding our failing infrastructure.

As Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis warned, "We may have democracy, or we may have wealth concentrated in the hands of a few, but we can't have both."
