Re "'Cash-out' a big cost for state" (Page A1m April 8): This and similar articles can lead many voters to believe public agency employees are overcompensated compared to the private sector. Many already think public agencies waste money.
Fortunately, there is a simple solution. Just give voters the chance to vote on an initiative that prohibits public employees from receiving compensation that exceeds compensation paid in the private sector. The initiative could also include a provision that any public agency program exceeding private sector costs would have to be put out to competitive bidding.
The public employee unions should jump at the opportunity to put concerns about their compensation to rest. Problem solved.
