Re "Street party melees part of student life in UCSB community" (Page A2, April 8) I am a parent of a senior at UC Santa Barbara.
First a correction to the article: the students were not on spring break last weekend as stated in the article. Spring break was March 24-28.
The culture of partying at UCSB gave my daughter pause before attending the university, but the academic program attracted her to the campus. Unfortunately, it has been mostly a negative experience because of the party mentality. I get that students want to party, I'm no prude, but my daughter and her friends mostly hid out in their respective apartments last weekend, texting to check on each other and barely slept because of all the noise outside.
Luckily, she will be out of there come June. On Sunday, she summed up her feelings about Isla Vista in four words, "I hate this place."
