Who are these picketers?

Re "Grim message for co-op" (Our Region, April 21): I have always wondered who the people are holding the picket signs in front of construction sites or retail stores. They usually are protesting the use of non-union labor, pointing out the harmful effects of hiring workers that do not pay union dues or get union salaries.
Are these folks professional picketers, employees of the businesses they picket or maybe day laborers? It is my understanding in almost all cases, these folks are day laborers who are temporary employees of unions. These picketers are not covered by a pension, have no union paid health care or any of the benefits that the signs they hold demand the company they are picketing provide for their employees.
I find this practice most hypocritical but not unexpected from today's union bosses.
