Re "Schubert is the best choice for Sacramento County DA" (Endorsements, May 4): The Bee should not have endorsed Anne Marie Schubert for district attorney. Maggy Krell has broader experience in and out of the courtroom than Schubert does. Schubert has not done appeals, but Krell has.
Taxpayers pay for a retrial when a conviction gets reversed on appeal. The death penalty issue is a also a taxpayer issue. We rarely execute, but the taxpayers spend significantly more money on all death penalty trials and appeals when life without possible parole is an effective, less expensive alternative.
The criticism of Schubert is that she is too tied to the current administration and their bully, vindictive tactics. The criticism of Krell is that she is too young. That is more of a compliment: that she has done so much. She will return ethics to our prosecutor's office, something that has been sorely lacking under Jan Scully, who Schubert is too closely linked to.
