Re "Another shock in state Senate" (Page A1, May 7): In reference to the so-called retirement of Chief Senate Sergeant, Tony Beard, it leaves no doubt in anyone's mind that loyalty is indeed a lost art in the California Legislature.
Beard has spent 43 years of his life fielding for the state Senate with professionalism and dedication. The fact he kept a confidence under fire should reflect proudly on his character, rather than being given his walking papers by a puffed up Senate Pro Tem.
I think of many former senators in the span of Beard's career who regarded loyalty and ethics as something to hold dear. They would be outraged if they learned their staunchest supporter had been so shabbily treated after a lifetime of service, and for those legislators who don't know the meaning of integrity, look it up in your Funk & Wagnalls.
