Re "Steinberg powers through Senate's ethics crises in his final year" (Capitol & California, May 9): Darrell Steinberg's intelligence and integrity will be invaluable in reforming the management of public institutions marred by actual and alleged corruption.
However, this crisis also calls for more hands-on executive leadership. Jerry Brown championed the landmark Political Reform Act 40 years ago. It's time again for him to vigorously take up the mantle of reform. Calls for senators to resign simply aren't enough.
As with the state budget, seemingly intractable problems require bold, sensible leadership that doesn't shirk from uncomfortable realities.
