Re "California drags down nation's pre-kindergarten enrollment" (Capitol Alert, May 13): Gov. Brown's budget seems to have forgotten one very important item: an increase in early childhood education funding.
The future of California, our sustainability if you will, rests solely in the development of the next generation. With the continued and growing divide between the wealthy and the rest of our citizens, it is more important than ever to level the playing field by giving these young people a fair shot at achieving a better future. The experts all agree that this critical time of development is crucial in the life of any child, then closing the gap for as many of our children as possible is the right thing to do.
With more than 50 percent of California's children unable to get into early childhood programs and over 200,000 on waiting lists, our governor or the Legislature needs to address this problem.
