The governor was careful. The Legislature listened. Consequently, on behalf of 67,000 frontline public safety professionals protecting our communities, we thank Gov. Jerry Brown for signing Speaker John Perez's AB 1035.
This legislation provides families coping with the loss of a loved one from work-related cancer an adequate window to apply for worker's compensation death benefits.
We understood the governor's concerns. We appreciate the precise review of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health data regarding mortality and cancer amongst public safety workers.
We knew this bill would affect only a small group of first responders. However, the impacts on these grieving families will be dramatic. The loss of a loved one is an incredible burden to bear. It is sensible for us to care for the families of these fallen officers and firefighters.
Thank you, Gov. Brown, for looking out for those keeping us safe.
