Re "An epic fight to see who will lose" (Page A1, May 15): The article points out a fundamental truth about statewide conservative politics. That the Republicans have painted themselves in to the corner of irrelevancy is blindingly obvious. The battle between Republican gubernatorial opponents would be epic, if only anyone were watching. A more telling turn of phrase could not be found.

I find that my somewhat right of center political views to be less distant from slightly left of center ideas than they are to the conservative right. For this view, conservative idealists would brand me a heretic, to which little attention is paid by the vast majority of California voters, who yawn and want to know what's for dinner.

The truly epic battle among California Republicans should be between the middle right Republicans, who want their party relevant again and those on the far right who adhere to their rigid ideology.
