Mailer Wins Over a Vote

Re "Mailers rip council hopeful" (Our Region, May 14): The negative campaign mailers comparing City Council candidate Julius Cherry to Julius Caesar won a vote this week. My mother, with three different fliers in her hand, declared she would vote for Cherry because she did not appreciate how the mailers were picturing him as a mean guy. I attended the candidates' forum in our area. At the forum Cherry was aggressively questioned on his pension and he reasonably responded. As someone who imagines herself serving the public, I wondered, "What would I have done after 30 years of firefighting?" Asking that type of question quickly dissuades a person from any illusions of grandeur in the public arena. I commend all three candidates for the District 7 City Council seat. But I think I will vote with my mom and try to send a message to the outside interests that negative caricatures aren't going to work.
