None so blind

Re "Climate change theory porous" (Letters, May 15): John Hein's reaction to The Bee story on climate change reveals his reflexive dismissal of anything from government as lacking credibility.

The NIPCC, published by the Heartland Institute (HI), is a conservative free-market think tank that pays so-called scientists to discredit current climate science based solely on reviews of contrarian studies. The IPCC, the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, invites thousands of the world's climate experts to review all current literature, including that which challenges widely accepted conclusions. It is reviewed and approved consensually by 120 nations.

Contrary to Hein's assertion, on which he bases his claim of irony, these scientists are not paid by the IPCC. HI also has challenged ozone depletion, damage from acid rain and the dangers of secondhand smoke. Denial of science is unfathomably dangerous.

"There are none so blind as they who will not see."
