Re "McClintock mailer pitches independent opponent to Democrats" (Capitol & California, May 14): Army officers have had a long tradition of refusing to vote as a principle of a nonpolitical military. Generals WT Sherman, Marshall, Eisenhower and Petraeus followed this course. It is the right of each soldier to choose according to their conscience.

Art Moore studied political science at West Point and put his life on the line for this country. It's shameful for Tom McClintock to imply that Moore didn't care about our democracy.

McClintock is deceitful in how he represents himself. Recently he said he has "always returned a sizable surplus" from his Congressional budget. However, last year McClintock was the top spender of all California Republicans. Paul Cook (R-Yucca Valley) is very active in Congress, yet he spent $310,000 less for staff. Our representative ought to be honest with us.

Moore would serve with integrity, represent our district and make us proud.
