Re "The beauty of our communities is reflected in neighborhood parks" (Viewpoints, May 20): Despicable and cowardly is what I choose to call the thugs who engaged each other with gunfire at Peregrine Park in Natamos earlier this month in which one person was killed and six others were injured, including a 7-year-old child. To date, no one has been arrested. The shooting is likely gang-related.
Gregory Favre claims in his commentary that families own the parks. I partially agree with him. There are parks infested by gangsters and hoodlums that law-abiding citizens avoid for their own protection.
If we truly want safer parks, especially for our children, we have to fully eradicate the gang culture. It starts at home with how parents raise their children. Children at high-risk to become gang members must be identified early and effective interventions implemented. Unlike many folks, I am surprised there have not been more gang related shootings in Sacramento.
