Re "Arena foes had loony reasoning" (Marcos Breton, May 25): Marcos Breton got it right. The real failure of the battle over the Kings arena was over the need for close public scrutiny and debate that a public vote would have brought. Public investment this huge and risky needed that vote to get everything out in the open where it can be carefully examined. The opponents were not so much "dishonest" as completely naive.
The City Council's equally great and dishonest mistake was to do everything they could to circumvent and block that vote. With it, Sacramento would have been more knowledgeable and prepared for what's to come, which remains shrouded in serious doubts.
The Bee could also have done more to bring an honest critique to it's pages. Instead, The Bee chose to boost the council's proposal without serious question, despite national sports-economist's skepticism. Let's all hope we are not building a white elephant.
