Re "Marriage-law changes a retreat for democracy" (Another View, June 1): If we are to understand Margaret Bengs' logic, our very democracy is at risk as the courts declare anti-gay laws unconstitutional. She says "the manipulation of our democratic institutions to achieve a specific end is a dangerous precedent...a recipe for chaos and a trampling of liberty."

According to this logic, Jim Crow laws should still be in place and the Emancipation Proclamation was trampling on the liberty of white Southerners where the majority of voters wanted to maintain slavery.

I would also like to remind Bengs that the 14th Amendment provides that states cannot deny citizens their right to equal protection under the law.
