Why not desalination?

Re "Are dams the answer?" (Page A1, June 1): Why isn't there public discussion of building a desalination plant to serve the state, instead of several dams?

The cost could be about the same. The ocean is always going to be there and if the climate continues to warm, there will be more of it in the future, unlike rain and snow.

Entire countries depend on this method of obtaining potable water, so why not California? One plant could serve the whole state and stop the north/south conflict.
