Re "Benjamin Netanyahu urges world leaders to shun Palestinian unity government over ties to Hamas" (Nation/World, June 2)
From the Hamas Covenant 1988, which may be found at http://avalon.law.yale.edu/20th_century/hamas.asp:
"Article 13: Initiatives, and so-called peaceful solutions and international conferences, are in contradiction to the principles of the Islamic Resistance Movement. Abusing any part of Palestine is abuse directed against part of religion. Nationalism of the Islamic Resistance Movement is part of its religion."
On Tuesday, May 20, speaking in Doha and referring to the reconciliation signed with Fatah in April, Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal declared "Hamas has already made sacrifices and this was necessary to be closer with our brothers, but with the invader we will not make any compromises."
It appears unlikely that Hamas has any genuine intention to accept and abide by the conditions set by the Middle East Quartet for Hamas to be part of an accepted government.
