Re "California Chrome falls short of Triple Crown" (June 8): The story of California Chrome, so reminiscent of Seabiscuit, captured my imagination. I was heartbroken at his Belmont defeat by horses who had not run in the other Triple Crown races.
Chrome's owner Steve Coburn has a valid point. The Triple Crown has become a farce. In the days when we actually had Triple Crown winners, the horses ran in all three races. Great horses like Secretariat ran against five horses in the Preakness and four in the Belmont. Nowadays, fresh entries pop up in the Preakness and Belmont.
What other sport allows this? In other sports, you have to participate in the eliminatory rounds before you can advance to the final round. Can you imagine a fresh team waltzing into the Super Bowl, not having played in any of the NFL games all season?
As long as this keeps up, we will probably never have another Triple Crown winner.
