Re "Chrome's historic bid dies (Page A1, June 8): I was one of the millions of Californians cheering for California Chrome on Sunday. To read that his foot was injured at the beginning of the race made me wonder if someone might have sabotaged his gate, possibly with broken glass or something sharp. Can you imagine running a mile and a half on an injured foot?
I have a suggestion: Give California Chrome credit for winning the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness, then let him run next year--all fresh and rested, with his jockey picking his gate, and not letting anyone harm him in any way.
This was definitely not a fair race. I agree with his owner that it's not fair to race a horse who hasn't had some down time to rest and relax.
